The Rumination of David Holzman's Diary (1967)

The Rumination of David Holzman's Diary (1967) David Holzman's Diary is such an immense piece of work in terms of showcasing the awkward tension and the humour it derives from a character who is deeply clueless about his own behaviour, yet you get such a fascinating insight into his mind and his pontification and just how he seems to dig himself into deeper and deeper holes. It's that central juxtaposition that this whole movie plays with which is just so compelling and honestly I think it's both as funny as it is outright anguishing. The whole movie just feels like that and I think what's more is that, even when I wasn't laughing at this film, I was just fixated on it just with what it reveals about Holzman. Holzman presents this central dichotomy of being a type of guy who wants to get close to women but, at the same time, can only approach it in terms of projection and imposition. This also isolates him from people and there's so many moments in this wher...

Homer's Enemy, or Why Grimey Deserved to Die For His Sins

Homer's Enemy, or Why Grimey Deserved to Die for His Sins Grimey in his element Something that's always interested me about Homer's Enemy is how it's sort of seen as this encapsulation of reactionary attitudes towards the American Dream - of the indignation some people feel of how people who work hard are not rewarded, yet some people just seem to get by on pure luck but, I think, the inherent truth of Homer's Enemy is just how it examines the logic of that. But I also know that Swartzwelder, as a writer, identifies way more with Homer than Grimey and sees Grimey as just an encapsulation of all the worst flaws of someone who is indignant towards this type of structure. Sure he's kind of right but he's right in a way where he just indulges himself in self-torture and revenge fantasies rather than getting at any sort of resolve. By seeing Homer as an encapsulation of all his frustrations, he misses out on so much stuff, in wake of just seeing this singular po...

Video Nasties and Moral Panic

Image
CW: Mentions of Sexual Violence, Gore, Lot to infer from the Title The Video Nasties are something that I've had such an interest in for such a long time, and I think they're just a weird example of the sort of moral panic that gets spun around horror films, where people just can't imagine how extreme they get, then they see what's available and they're like "Holy shit." and I guess it's just a very quintessentially British moral panic. Sure it's known internationally but like you look at the origins of it and even just the term "Video Nasty" and you think like "This object [not a film]. This nasty!" sort of thing and it's just yeah. Naturally, you have outraged people and then this entirely other group of people who exclusively seek out so-called 'Nasties' just because of the notoriety surrounding the films and the fact that they've been banned or censored in some capacity. "These are films that are inspiri...

The Irreverence, Liminal Atmosphere and Catharsis of MyHouse

Image
The Irreverence, Liminal Atmosphere and Catharsis of MyHouse CW: Spoilers for MyHouse MyHouse is a DOOM WAD that has gained a lot of popularity over the past few months, mainly because of its inventiveness and the fact that it seems so bewildering, strange and unusually complex when you begin to explore the map more and more. Supposedly it's modelled after a friend's house and the map was meant to pay tribute to his dead friend who worked on the map, and then it wound up expanding and taking such a massive toll on the guy's life who worked on it and then worked on it and produced such a cursed version of the level, documenting and unloading all of these terrifying feelings onto it and what not. That doesn't really make that much sense honestly. Really, I played through the DOOM WAD and it was just very standard, kind of a neat recreation of a house, but then like nothing special really came from it. Just weird that there's so many things attached to it. Okay, okay, ...
